Detroit Area Agency on Aging Intergenerational Programs- Detroit

“The Spin”:  Detroit Area Agency on Aging (DAAA) partnered with Life Remodeled to train inner-city youth how to launder their school clothes helping them to prepare and to encourage them to stay in school. Life Remodeled partnered with Junior Achievement (JA) who worked with the students and older adults on a comprehensive business planning process. They created strategies around marketing the space, monitoring the finances, and creating systems related to operations and organization.  At the end of the 13-week program, the students learned how to manage a small business as well as created meaningful relationships with the older adults who mentored them throughout the process.

Virtual Intergenerational Cooking: This program was designed to help improve communication within families in challenging situations, and have youth gain a better understanding of the aging process. Discussions around the process of aging were incorporated into the virtual cooking program during breakout sessions. The topics of discussion touched on included Socialization, Purpose, Health, Relationships to Technology, and Nutrition. The Detroit Food Academy (DFA) put together recipes, shopped for ingredients, packed meal kits, and facilitated the 90-minute sessions that ran consecutively for four weeks with 20 families.
